Perfect Game's New Regulation: A Step Forward for 12U Player Safety
Share
As we navigate through the 2024 baseball season, it’s important to stay updated on the latest changes and regulations that impact our sport. One significant update has come from Perfect Game, which will have a direct effect on our 12U players. Starting August 14, 2024, Perfect Game will ban all drop 5 bats from 12U play. Drop 5 bats are still legal for 13U play. This decision is a crucial move toward enhancing player safety, and I want to take a moment to explain why this change is both necessary and beneficial.
Understanding the Change
For those unfamiliar, the term "drop" in bat specifications refers to the difference between the length and weight of the bat. A drop 5 bat, for example, is five ounces lighter than its length in inches. While drop 5 bats are heavier than drop 10 or drop 8 bats, they offer more mass. For strong players who can maintain their bat speed, this added mass translates into greater force upon impact.
Safety Concerns
The 12U age group is unique in that it includes players of varying sizes and strengths. Some 12-year-olds are significantly larger and more physically developed than their peers, which can create a disparity in performance and, more importantly, safety. When powerful players swing drop 5 bats, the resulting force can be hazardous, especially considering the shorter pitching distance in 12U games.
Pitchers and infielders are at a higher risk of injury due to the increased exit velocity of balls hit with heavier bats. The closer proximity of the pitching mound in 12U games means less reaction time for these young players, increasing the potential for serious injuries. By banning drop 5 bats, Perfect Game aims to reduce these risks and ensure a safer playing environment for all participants.
Looking Ahead
As we adjust to this new regulation, Bat Club USA remains committed to supporting our players and their families. We understand that equipment changes can be challenging, but we believe this move is in the best interest of our young athletes’ safety and development.
We encourage all our members to review their current equipment and make the necessary adjustments before the August 14, 2024, deadline. If you have any questions or need assistance selecting the appropriate bat, our team at Bat Club USA is here to help.
Final Thoughts
Player safety has always been a top priority at Bat Club USA, and we fully support Perfect Game's decision to ban drop 5 bats in 12U play. This change is a positive step toward ensuring that our young players can enjoy the game we all love while staying safe on the field.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication to making baseball a safer and more enjoyable sport for everyone.
Play hard, stay safe, and keep swinging for the fences!
Sincerely,
Erik Rico
