I Bought the Wrong Bat

Softball and baseball bat

Have you ever tried to return a bat after you remove the wrapper? I vividly remember purchasing a bat a few years ago at a major retailer. The associate completed my transaction and when she was handing me my bat looked me directly in the eye and said, “If you take off the wrapper, you will not be able to return the bat. No exceptions.”  You can tell she had dealt with some frustrated customers who tried to return open bats. Return policies on bats have been a major pain point for customers for quite some time. Below are some of the main reasons for needing a different bat as well as some options to correct the problem.

Why you need to return the bat

Wrong Bat, Wrong League

My sons play in two USSSA sanctioned leagues. As the coach, I always pay attention to the bats the other team are using and every time I see a hitter with a USA stamped bat, I have the outfielder come in two steps. It has nothing to do with the player’s talent. I just know that USA stamped bats are made to perform at a lower level than the USSSA stamped bats. Using a USA stamped bat in a USSSA sanctioned league or tournament is definitely legal, but it is also putting your child at a disadvantage. On the contrary, using a USSSA sanctioned bat in a USA stamp league is illegal and will get the bat banned from play.

Wrong Length

Finding the right bat length can be difficult to assess for a myriad of reasons. You need to be able to assess how close the hitter stands to the plate, how they extend their arms during the swing and if they recently hit a growth spurt. A bat that is an inch too big or small can change the contact point on the barrel which can turn homeruns into flyball outs.

Wrong Weight

Many leagues now require players to use certain drops based on their age groups. USSSA for example, makes 13U baseball players use a drop 8 and 14U has to use a BBCOR drop 3. If you purchased a drop 10 for your 13/14U player, they cannot use that bat in their division.

Kids being fickle

Have you noticed that hitters love their bat when they go 3 for 3 and hate it when they go 0 for 2? Or their teammate just got a new bat and hit a homerun so now they want it. Confidence is a big part hitting and having a bat they love gives them confidence.

What are your options

Now that you are stuck with an opened bat, you do have some options, but they can create some issues for you.

Sell it

Selling the bat is going to give you an opportunity to recoup some of your costs. Remember that bats are like cars, the value goes down the second you drive it off the lot/open the wrapper. You can lose up to 50% of the value of the bat and may have additional seller fees depending where you sell it. It can also include the hassle of having to deal with shipping and refunds.

Trade in at consignment shop

Used sporting goods store will take your bat on trade-in. This is going to be easier than selling the bat but you may only get 10 to 15% of the retail value of the bat.

Keep it in the garage

If you don’t have the time to get around to selling the bats, you can always just keep them. In most cases the bat sits in a garage or shed collecting dust.

Can We Play Youth Baseball? I say YES. I’m pretty sure it goes without saying, we are all anxious to begin sports. Any and all would be great, but what we’re missing on these warm, spring afternoons…is BASEBALL. During these last couple of months in quarantine, we have been able to run around outside with our kids, play catch, maybe hit a few balls and it got me thinking- youth baseball COULD make a comeback.
